Is Your Home Ready for a DAFI? Electrician and Plumber's Checklist  - A practical step-by-step guide to preparing your home for installing a DAFI water heater.

Is Your Home Ready for a DAFI? Electrician and Plumber's Checklist

1. Electrical Installation – Can Your Home Handle a DAFI?

Before installing a DAFI heater, ensure your home’s electrical system can handle the new load. First, check your circuit breaker panel—do you have space for an additional breaker? Even smaller DAFI units (3.7 kW) require a dedicated circuit. Larger models (5.5 kW or 7.3 kW) demand specially rated wiring.

Every DAFI model requires appropriate wiring—typically copper cables of 2.5 mm² or even 4 mm² in cross-section. Ensure these cables include grounding. Older aluminum wiring isn't suitable and must be replaced, as it can overheat, posing safety risks.

DAFI units need a TN-S or TN-C-S electrical system—systems with a separate protective grounding conductor. If your home has an outdated TN-C system, upgrading it to meet modern standards is essential. This is straightforward but must be handled by a certified electrician to ensure compliance.

Don’t forget the residual current device (RCD)—it’s mandatory for appliances used near water. Without it, your DAFI installation won't be compliant or safe.

2. Water Pressure – The Key Parameter for DAFI

Proper water pressure is critical for optimal DAFI performance. These devices operate efficiently between 0.6 bar and approximately 6 bars, with an ideal range of 2–4 bars. This ensures reliable water flow without stressing the heater.

If your home frequently experiences water pressure below 0.6 bar, particularly in upper floors or during heavy water use, consider installing a pressure pump or a hydro-pneumatic system. These solutions guarantee smooth, uninterrupted DAFI operation.

Conversely, excessively high water pressure (over 6 bars) requires a pressure regulator. Excessive pressure can cause device damage or frequent malfunctions. Installing a regulator is inexpensive and quickly completed by a plumber.

3. Water Quality – Do You Need a Filter?

Surprisingly, water quality significantly impacts your DAFI heater’s lifespan. Hard water, rich in minerals like calcium, can quickly deposit scale on heating elements, reducing their efficiency and potentially causing premature failure.

If your area has hard water, installing a mechanical or advanced softening filter is essential. A basic mesh filter might not suffice—opting for a softening or conditioning filter extends device lifespan and enhances water quality overall.

Filters aren’t expensive, and they significantly improve your daily experience. Softer water means better taste, healthier skin, and improved appliance longevity—benefiting not just your DAFI heater, but your entire home.

4. Installation Spot – Where Should You Place Your DAFI?

Thanks to their compact size, DAFI units offer flexibility for installation. Common spots include under sinks or near washbasins, but adequate access to both water and electrical installations is crucial.

In bathrooms, position the heater away from direct water spray from showers—while rated IPX4, suitable for water splashes, it shouldn't be installed inside shower cabins directly.

Ensure ample space around your DAFI for comfortable connection of electrical and plumbing lines. Easy access simplifies future maintenance, such as filter replacements or routine cleaning tasks.

5. Regular Checkups – Keeping Your DAFI Running Smoothly

To maximize your DAFI’s longevity, regular maintenance checks are essential—recommended every 30 months by a professional. These inspections assess electrical safety, water-tight connections, and internal component condition.

Periodically, you should personally clean the inlet filter screen. Removing calcium deposits maintains optimal device performance, preventing unexpected cold showers.
